WHY DIVORCE?
Divorce of separation of marriage has become part of our lives yet God’s word is
clear that this ought not to be so. Divorce or any kind of separation was not part
of God’s plan concerning marriage. Unfortunately, there is very little we could do
to stem this evil tide and attack against the institution of marriage. My books on
Family series is what I can contribute to help marriages survive and affirms God’s
will. Having been involved in marriage counseling for over three decades, it is
sometimes overwhelming if not depressing when one realizes that many married
couples have little or no idea what marriage really is before embarking
on the marital journey and years down the lane, they seem to have learnt so little.
Many marriages were built around unrealistic ideals and expectations. A lot of
potential husbands and wives fill their minds with half-baked truths and myths abou
t marriage., which only lead to frustrations when they eventually get married.
We presently live in a world where almost every conceivable obscene practice’ in the
name of marriage seem to be acceptable. The marriage institution is fast losing global
recognition. The legalization of same sex marriage in many countries is a reality we now
contend with. Divorce is almost assuming a ‘celebrity status’ in many parts of the world.
Even Africa where there wasa high level of rigidity in the regulation of marriage is fast
losing her grip. Many conservative societies Africa, Asia and other parts of the world are
caught in the web of globalization in whichdivorce is a natural aftermath in the slightest
marital crises. It may be difficult to win the battle
against divorce or the war against other forms of marital attacks if we do not gain clear
knowledge of what marriage actually is. In my first book in the family series ( Marriage
Under Attack), I tried to argue against other forms of marital practices other than a
heterogeneous(one man, one wife) union under Godly principles and standards. My focus
in this book is to discuss the issues around divorce. Before we understand the concept of
divorce, it will be important to put what marriage is in proper perspective. Again the word
of God remains the perfect standard for definition and explanation of this great phenomenon
called marriage. Of course many writers and experts have expressed their wealth of knowledge
and experience towards repositioning the mind of men on the issues about marriage.
Marriage according to Douglas and Tenny “is the formalization and sanctification of the union
of one man and woman for procreation of children”(Douglas and Tenny,1987)
