Six Areas of Defilement:
- Sinful Thoughts and Desires: Guard against evil thoughts, murder, adultery, immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander (Matthew 15:19-20).
- Evil Speech: Avoid gossip, slander, lies, and foul language, which can defile a person (James 3:6).
- Immorality and Impurity: Reject sexual immorality, impurity, and greed (Ephesians 5:3-5).
- Idolatry and False Worship: Don’t prioritize anything above God or worship false gods (Exodus 20:3-6).
- Unforgiveness and Bitterness: Forgive and let go of grudges to avoid defilement (Hebrews 12:15).
- Hypocrisy and Legalism: Prioritize genuine love for God and others over self-righteousness (Matthew 23:23-28).
Common Defiling Behaviors:
- Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14-22)
- Blasphemy (Matthew 12:31-32)
- Unforgiveness (Matthew 6:14-15)
- Pride (Proverbs 16:18)
- Adultery (Matthew 5:27-28)
- Theft (Exodus 20:15)
- Murder (Exodus 20:13)
- Anger (Matthew 5:21-22)
- Hatred (1 John 3:15)
- Envy (James 3:14-16)
- Greed (Luke 12:15)
- Lust (Matthew 5:27-28)
- Coveting (Exodus 20:17)
- Bitterness (Hebrews 12:15)
- Unwholesome talk (Ephesians 4:29)
Pursue Purity:
To avoid defilement, focus on:
- Guarding your heart and mind
- Pursuing righteousness and holiness
- Forgiving and letting go of grudges
- Loving God and others genuinely
