THE CALL OF JESUS:

TEXT: Matthew 11: 28-30

v28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

v29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul.

v30 For my yoke is very easy and my burden is light.

Now, let us throw more light on the key words namely:

Weary, burdened, and yoke.

WEARY:

The word weary means-feeling of extreme tiredness, especially as a result of exertion. Biblically it means exhausted in strength, endurance, and vigor.

The word, weary is also used as worry- observation on the heavy workload or absence of relaxation that seem to characterized a person’s situation.

BURDENED:

One can be burdened with:

  1. Worry
  2. Hardship
  3. Distress
  4. Debt
  5. Guilt
  6. Responsibilities
  7. Sins or iniquities.

When somebody is is weary and overburdened with so many challenges, depression may come into play. And

What is depression:

Depression can be defined as prolonged feeling of sadness as result of unrealized expectation. Depression is characterized by:

A state of low mood, loss of memory, loss of appetite, incessant headache, dizziness, Job deterioration, withdrawal from social activities, lack of interest in sex, inordinate laughter, nagging, irregular menses, isolation, verbal abuse, suicidal ideation among others.

For example, Job struggled with depression when he lost all he had including children, and became very sick.

Elijah felt hopeless, alone and afraid. He had low self esteem and wanted to die.

Apostle Paul said:

Are they servants of Christ ( I am out of my mind to talk like this) I am more, I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.

Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, Once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent night and a day in the open sea.

I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own country men, in danger from Gentiles, in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea, and in danger from false brothers.

I have labored often without sleep, I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food. I have been cold and naked, Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches ( 2Cor. 11: 23-28 ).

In our our generation and today’s church, there are so many challenges both to the Godly and ungodly. The Godly suffer their challenges, but with the comfort and directives from the Holy Spirit, Whereas, the ungodly suffer without such comfort and so remain like sheep without shepherd.

Please note that whatever your challenges God is beautiful for situations, If God can take care of birds and every other creatures, then he can take care of your challenges. That’s the reason for giving His only begotten Son(Jesus Christ) who died as a propitiation for our sins. Jesus has answers to whatever your problems may be. Simply believe in him for the salvation of your soul.
